The reason why we exist…
July 1st 2018 - Our official start date of this thing we initially called Sober Sundays. I am a huge nerd for recovery/sobriety and fitness/movement. When I started CrossFit in 2016 I had no idea how impactful movement was going to be for me. I had no idea I would gain way more mentally than I would physically. When I found that out, the only thing I knew what to do with it - was to share it with others. I needed to give back what had been freely given to me - that’s the recovery way.
So I set out to create a space, a community of like-minded people who were sober, to move their bodies. I wanted to help people find their strength, their resilience, their courage. I wanted to help people feel better and help them see they were not alone.
We started with maybe 2-3 people at our Sober Sunday’s in Eden Prairie. We moved to a new gym in Plymouth, met the National Director of The Phoenix at the time, got set up as a volunteer group with them and kept up the Sober Sunday’s which turned into The Phoenix. We now had about 5-ish people attending. We promoted, we talked with other people, we shared our stories, we smashed the stigma of substance use and mental health, we recovered OUT LOUD… WE GREW!
We moved to a new space, hold all types of different events, work out together, cry and laugh together, support each other, push and encourage each other and do it SOBER! We are a family; a community that is one of the most magical communities I have ever been a part of!
We now consistently have 25-30 people attend our Sunday groups! We are so proud of the space we have created and how we have fostered an inclusive environment that is welcoming and non-judgmental. We are excited to be able to embrace what we have created and we hope that you will join us on the ride!
